Trust your Whims

Greetings Barbarians, Long days and pleasant nights!

There was a point in life that I suppressed my whims, afraid to be deemed selfish. I figured I could never afford it, or I was undeserving, so I never follow any real passion. For a moment I felt stuck, never going anywhere and doing nothing of importance. It was a bad place to be in, and I would never want to be there ever again.

Whims are often linked with negative meanings these days, or at least in my experience. It is often childish, selfish, and irrational according to where I am from. But if you asked me, some of the greatest things I did for myself are from simple whims.

If you’re an avid reader of this blog, then you are aware that I used to sport a hip-length hair. I’m very fond of my hair, its lusciousness, and shine. I was proud of its length (long hair is not easy to maintain), until the day that I decided to shave it off. As I said, I love having long hair but shaving it off was liberating. For the first time in years, I began to see what was possible and it was all out of a whim.

To celebrate that moment, I’d like to write about my other whims that seem to put everything in place. It may come off a trivial, but it all felt right.

To begin, my first real whims actualized are my books. Coming from a family of non-readers, I remember looking at a bookcase from my ex’s house. Admiring the sight of books; undisturbed on the shelves and I feel envious of their owner. I said to myself, someday I’ll have my books to read and display on a shelf. Fast forward a few years and here we are, I got a few books that I’m quite proud of that sits on an industrial shelf. It wasn’t massive but it was meaningful, with each piece curated from my interest.

Next, was the time I tried long-distance running. I picked up a pair of running shoes and started running daily. I gave it a good try despite being not my thing, but the good thing about it is that it reignited my passion for training. Running leads to my real passion which is lifting weights despite not lifting right now. I do miss it and I look forward to the day I get to do it again.

Speaking of shoes, it is one of the profound whims in my life. I’ve always been fond of shoes, but it was in classic shoes that I’ve become passionate about. Funny because back then, I’d rather jump off a cliff than wear a nice pair of casual derbies. But like all, everything changes Now, I’d wear a great pair of shoes whenever the situation allows it. It dawned on me one day how sneakers are a lot more expensive when you think about it. A great quality pair of shoes or boots could last you for years depending on how you take care of it. On top of that, leather gets better with age; something that sneakers can’t do. Not that I hate sneakers, it’s just what it is; a sneaker.

And the greatest of my whims, blogging… Yes, you heard that right; this blog is nothing but a whim. I wake up one day and said to myself I wanted to start blogging. A few events prompted this; like that time my friend suggested that I should write so, thanks, Marco! The other reason for blogging was rather simple, it was to cope, document, and set my thoughts straight. It was a tough period in my life, and I have suffered general anxiety disorder and depression. I’d be honest with you; this is something that I’m not proud of, but it must be dealt with. Blogging has been a great way for me to set myself straight and be the best that I can be.

I’d be honest, if it wasn’t for my whims, I wouldn’t allow myself to see the possibilities. You could say that I’m justifying my whims, but that is not the point. The important thing is that you should get yourself out there and move your butt. If it wasn’t for my whims, I’d be at a standstill.

Not all my whims yielded great results; there are moments that it resulted in heartbreak. But I’ll continue to trust my whims and hear what it has to say because I’ll never know what the next best thing could be. A silly whim right now could be a great opportunity in the future.

To courage and freedom, and whims!

“Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.”

  1. Most of the greatest achievements have began on a whim. There is an old saying that I will paraphrase. Those who can, do… those who can’t, analyze… that is the nature of the way our brain works. By letting go of the perpetual state of anxiety analysis paralysis can cause. To let go, we can then move towards greater heights of Self realized development.

    1. Wow! Thank you.
I agree, whether fast or slow, life is all about movement. While it is true that life needs a certain degree of analyzation, but it much not also hinder any action. Think in order to act.
      Cheers! 🍸

  2. It feels great to have your own personal library of books you can go to anytime you want to reread your favorite books 🙂 i own a few ebooks but holding a physical book is still the best if you have the space to keep it 🙂
