What Happened in August

Greetings Barbarians! Long days and pleasant nights!

For some unknown reason, I’ve always loved August. Maybe it’s nothing, but all sorts of things seem to find me in August; I could go on to say that love comes for me in August.

In case you haven’t noticed, I have discontinued Outfit of the Month. Amazon seems to disagree with my picks and decided to cancel out my affiliate account. Despite that, writing will still go on.

To replace that, I’ve decided to do a sort of monthly recap of things I did for each month. When I started blogging, I told myself that I wanted to be more engaged in life – I want to experience it as it unfolds. The more I write, the more I want to experience; the more I experience, the more I wanted to write about it.

So, these are the things that happened in August…

The month started with a terrible craving for a burrito. So, I went for a burrito the next day along with some fries and it was great. I took a short stroll to the local mall after and ran across my old boss who would later resign from the office. It’s amazing how things change in a short time. I do mean her well and wish nothing but the best in her future endeavors.

I cooked two steaks this August, I remember how happy I was seeing a nice piece of meat on the countertop. I like my steaks simple, salt, pepper, butter, garlic, thyme, and rosemary. I’m a simple man; when I see red meat, I eat red meat. I usually add eggs, bacon or some greens to my steak and of course, some gravy.

I also started brewing coffee at home, and I’m gonna be honest – there is a huge difference in taste compared to instant. Not that there is anything wrong with instant coffee. Aside from the taste, I like the sort of mindfulness the comes from brewing my coffee. Nothing fancy of course, coffee, sugar, and milk; yes you heard it right, I like milk in my coffee.

This August has been filled with books. I bought Lord of the Flies from a local bookstore and a bunch of other books arrived by the mail. Finally got my hands on a copy of Machiavelli’s The Prince, though it took some time to arrive; 5 months to be exact. I don’t mind waiting, it’s not as if I’m not doing anything while waiting.

I’ve always wanted to have a fountain pen and I finally got one! The first thing I noticed was the weight – fountain pens are a bit substantial compared to ballpoint pens. I got a black Pilot Metropolitan, it’s cheap yet very stylish. It’s a great pen to begin with when you want to venture out to fountain pens.

And at last! I get to clean out my dirty sneakers. I clean my shoes each month as much as I could and keep them in good condition. It is also a good way to check if some shoes need to be repair or replaced. It’s not about how many pairs you have but how well you take care of it.

Life has been great so far, slow progress is better than no progress at all. I could still get to try something new while at the same time fostering the old. Life is tough but I’m still grateful, I still get to enjoy simple pleasures in life. There is a silver lining in everything, cherish it.

When all else fails, it is often that the small things are the ones that save us. Augusts made me realize that there is more to life than hurt and misery. It’s either live your life or die, no middle grounds, no maybes, and no regrets. I will continue life as I intended to be, by being better – by being handcrafted.

A man must learn to truly be happy with the small things. Otherwise, he will go on living without a genuine appreciation of what is in front of him. He must strike the balance between his ambition and happiness. He is grateful to what he has right now yet still hungry to reach new heights. It’s either go big or go home, be the best that you can be.

To courage and freedom, and to August!
