Ryan Reynolds seems to be all the rage these days and for good reasons! All thanks to his brand of humor that is undeniably him. On his latest outing, the actor lends his voice to everyone’s beloved Pokemon, Pikachu on Pokemon: Detective Pikachu!
The promising trailers did not disappoint! The movie succeeded in immersing its audience to the world of Pokemon. It did a great job in welcoming both old-time fans of the series as well as it’s new audiences. My daughter seemed to enjoy it all throughout. Right from the start, it was full of good-hearted humor that is sure to make even the grown-ups chuckle. My favorite scene is the part when a sad Pikachu sings the classic Pokemon theme song while sobbing. It was hilarious and at the same time brought back memories from my childhood. It also has its somber moments, like when Pikachu told Tim (the son of his “partner”) that if his dad was there, he would hug him so hard that his bones would pop.
Despite the lack of a potent backstory from the film’s main antagonist, Howard Clifford (played by Bill Nighy). It does, yet, did a great job in developing the character of Tim Goodman (played by Justice Smith). From being a lonesome young adult that is resentful towards his father. To a good partner that gets to the bottom the “disappearance” of his detective father Harry.
Another thing that I find lacking in the story is the trainer battles. But aside from that, the movie featured a very funny battle between Charizard and Pikachu. And the epic final battle between a Howard Clifford possessed Mewtwo and Pikachu. Which, by the way, made my daughter jump out of her seat out of excitement.
Overall, the movie has a great plot that has its own twists and turns. It is interesting enough to keep the older audience watching. But simple enough to keep its younger audience engaged. But what I absolutely loved about the movie is right after we stepped outside the cinema. The conversations I have with my daughter after watching the movie. On how she wants to be a Pokemon trainer herself, and on how much she begs me to cough out a real-life Pikachu of her own. Thou such conversations need fantastical explanations are in no doubt, priceless. Nothing can ever compare to the bond a father has to his child, much more to a daughter. Much like the movie, a child can only grow to be his/her own person. A father can only hope for a child’s love. Clinging only to the wonderful memories he has with them, even if it’s just over Pokemon. Coming from a movie review, I bet you did not see this coming…

Wow! I never got myself into the cards, but I am fan of the classic red/blue/yellow games from the old Gameboy!
Many moons ago, legend has it that a young barbarian once punched someone over a Pokemon Gold version. =)

It was early indeed! The kid just jumped up and down the whole time. She was so excited, not a dull moment our way back home! =)

She later asked me for a real life Pikachu that she could pet. One of the few fantastical things she asked me for. Back then, it was a white unicorn with a rainbow colored mane….
Kids this days… Back then all i wanted to is to become a super saiyan…. -_-

Fantastic! Has she developed her taste for shoe shopping yet? Watch out!
What’s a super saiyan? In my day—it was Battle of the Planets and Speed Racer.

Arrrghhh…. Shoe and dress shopping…
She knows what she wants, so its quick but the kid has taste, hence expensive…
Super saiyan from Dragon Ball Z, but i did watch Speed Racer back then! =)
