Stress and anxiety are two of the most significant causes of mental health problems that men face today. Researchers found that managing stress and anxiety helps you be happier. It can lead to more fulfilling relationships and a fuller life. But when left unchecked, it can cause a wide range of health problems.
Men are notorious for neglecting their mental health. Generations of conditioning have led us to believe that we are not allowed to talk about how we feel. We avoid showing our emotions, especially crying, as we deem it soft. Hence, we are less likely to seek mental healthcare than women.

As a man, I also adhere to a strict code of silence. One of my credos is to: Never complain, Never explain, and Never condemn. The truth is that men should be careful about what comes out of their mouths and the ears that listen to them. But let me be the one to tell you that there is nothing more manly than addressing your mental health.
You see, men are natural fixers. We fix things; that is our nature. It just so happens that we rank ourselves the least on the list of things we must address.

When Claire died, I blamed myself despite doing everything I could. The same thing happened when I got separated. In the back of my mind, I could have done more. And even now that I know things are beyond my control, the feeling of needing to fix things persists.
How to Improve Mental Health
Before we proceed, let’s make things crystal clear. I’m not, in any shape or form, a mental health expert. The things I’m saying are more like tips when I’m struggling with something. I aim to promote mental health and make it a priority for you. If you have concerns about your mental health, please seek professional help.
Don’t Isolate Yourself
I get it; some time alone can be helpful to recharge yourself. But, if you are struggling and the quality of your thoughts is not pleasant, try reaching out to a friend. Make an effort to accept a social invitation you would otherwise have turned down.

Keep a Journal
If you can’t talk to someone, you could try keeping a journal. People who keep their emotions bottled up suffer from mental health issues. Writing down your feelings allows you to process your emotions constructively. It could help you understand your emotions on a deeper level.

Set Aside Time Each Day to Focus on Yourself
As I said earlier, we men need to focus on ourselves more. Focusing on yourself seems unimportant when dealing with everything on your plate. But finding time each day to do something that makes you happy can make a difference to your mental health. It could be as simple as reading a book or building miniature models. What you choose to do is optional as long as it makes you happy.

Practice Gratitude
Gratitude is a crucial factor in the development of positive emotions. It can also help to improve relationships and increase feelings of social connectedness. You can write it in your journal or say affirmations in front of a mirror. The main idea is that you are letting yourself recognize the positive things in your life.

Put Down Your Smartphone
Smartphones are a part of modern life, but they make self-isolation much easier. Spending too much time on social media can cause stress and anxiety. The same is true for continuous checking of emails. Take a break from your phone for a few minutes each day. Avoid checking your phone when you’re getting ready to sleep, or you could leave it at home while going for a walk.

Get Moving
Physical activities can have a strong impact on your mental health. It can help raise endorphins along with other happy hormones in your brain. Hormones like these improve your mood and reduce stress. On top of that, regular exercise promotes the growth of new brain cells. It can help improve cognitive function.

Practice Forgiveness
Feelings of anger, resentment, and bitterness build up in your mind and take a toll on your mental health. It creates anxiety and nowhere to turn, leading to stress and depression. Forgiveness, on the other hand, can help you release these negative emotions. It allows you to let go of past grievances and move forward. Practice forgiveness, especially towards yourself. Don’t beat yourself up. Tell yourself you won’t make that mistake again and move on.

Find a Community
Being part of a community or group can provide a sense of belonging and social support. A community can offer a safe space for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings. Doing so can promote self-esteem, decrease stress, improve mood, and promote well-being. Look for ads in your community for groups of people like you. You can also look online for forums where people discuss exciting things.

Afterthought
Men with positive mental health tend to be more productive. They have more fulfilling relationships and are more successful in their careers. Improved self-esteem and self-confidence can contribute to better decision-making and improved communication skills. Plus, men with positive mental health tend to have a more positive outlook on life. They better cope with stress and adversity, increasing happiness and satisfaction. Improved mental health makes you more likely to engage in meaningful activities. The result is a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Improving mental health can impact well-being and quality of life.
