Now, there has been a comment about the legitimacy of my fundraiser on my previous TMI. While I can say that everything I’ve told you so far is the truth, I leave the business of believing up to you. I can only say much and whether you believe it or not is up to you, it is either you’re willing to help or not. If you do, I’d appreciate it for the rest of my life; if you don’t, I can’t say anything more to make you change your mind. I am who I am as much as you are who you are. All I have are my friends to attest to what I am saying and for that, I’m thankful for them.
Now that we got that out of the way, let’s get going to our topic today.
Since ancient civilization, mankind has a fascination with writing things down. Our history is riddled with writings left behind by our ancestors. Whether it is on a stone slab or ancient papyrus, we never seem to run out of things to write and where to write them. Mankind is obsessed with writing.
As a blogger, there is no denying that I spend an awful amount in front of my laptop or my phone. There is no way around it if you want to be a blogger, you spend your time researching, writing, and promoting. Creating high-quality content is a meticulous process. Any tool that would make the process less tedious sure is helpful.
With that said, nothing could ever replace a handwritten word.
Handwritten words have a certain weight to them that no font would ever replicate. There is a certain charm to handwritten love letters that make people fall head over heels in love. There is no doubt about the power of words, and elegant handwriting wields all the power in the world.
Before becoming a blogger, I’ve spent seven years of my life working as a programmer. Part of being a programmer is spending your typical 9 to 5 in front of a computer to type in codes. It was during this period when my handwriting became atrocious. My handwriting isn’t pretty, to begin with. But being in front of a screen further reduced it to unintelligible scribbles.
I have always been a man fueled by his desire to improve himself. It has not always been easy, especially these days. But being better than I was yesterday has always been the goal.
So, if I spend a lot of time in front of a screen, why should I bother with my handwriting?
Handwritten messages or notes are more personal. Words are powerful and handwritten words have tenfold of that power. As a writer and blogger, we don’t deal with words rather the effective use of words to elicit powerful emotions. Handwritten notes have their personality. Each handwriting is unique as the person who yields it. When you write someone a letter, you enable them to see you. They would recognize the warmth of your distinct style and make a connection. You just can’t recreate that kind of familial warmth over a printed text, email or text messaging.
Another thing about writing by hand is that it can be quite meditative. Journaling was one of the things my therapist suggested back then. Writing has a strange effect of soothing the mind as well as unburdening your thoughts. I still keep stacks of my old journals and I still keep a notebook and pen within arms reach. Writing by hand allows you to engage your train of thought with ease. The continuous hand movement leaves you no room to second guess yourself. It makes it easier to write right down your thoughts compared to typing.
And lastly, elegant handwriting looks prettier than any elegant font. I know it’s not much of a reason but you have to admit that elegant handwriting stands out. Have you experienced a hard time reading something important because of bad handwriting? It doesn’t even need to be elegant as long as it is eligible, it just common courtesy to writing something
Social Media may be great at broadcasting what you’re having for lunch. But nothing beats a handwritten note to express genuine thoughts. An email cannot express ardent love or sincere apologies as a handwritten note could. Sure, handwritten letters are outdated but it is an art worthy of bringing back. It is tangible and has a hefty weight to it both metaphorical and physical.
As long as there are people who read, there will always be people who write. And as long as there are people who write, there will always be people who write by hand.
Before I end this post, I’d like to thank my friends for their support during this difficult time. You made us believe that we are worth something when people seem to turn their backs on us. I’m so thankful for your friendship and support. I wish this would be over soon. Maraming salamat at mahal ko kayo!

A Barbarian in Gentlemen's Clothing 
Yes, my handwriting has fallen by the wayside. However, I still use it to make file notes re meetings, phone calls or updates. That is because I find it quicker and more convenient to do so. Then they can be scanned in etc.
If I have time, or am prepared ahead of time, then I will type notes into whatever device I have on me at that moment.

Mr. A, you thoughts eloquently find their mark with this post. Handwritten words touch share our inner soul with another person. They show that we appreciate (and love) another person by taking the time to craft a thoughtful, handwritten word.

I know, right! I have horrible handwriting but when I have to say something personal, I’d give a note rather than send an e-mail. It’s much more personal that way.

You bring up a very good point. Because I’ve spent so much time on the computer, my handwriting has truly suffered.
When I offer my creative writing classes, I always encourage my students to write with a pen/ pencil and paper. There’s something about the physical experience that can’t be replicated on a keyboard.

Yes, I have atrocious handwriting. It’s something that I’ve always want to improve on.
Yep, no font could ever replicate handwritten words. It’s so personal, I make it to a point to hand out handwritten notes whenever the situation calls for it. Plus it’s much more efficient than typing. 🙂

Handwriting is, also, a dying art since schools are no longer teaching cursive.

Yes, I try to practice writing in cursive as much as I can. My handwriting deteriorated over the years.
