Greetings Barbarians! Long days and pleasant nights!
Ever since the quarantine started, I have been in a drinking mood. I’ll admit that I’m not much of a drinker and I hate getting drunk. On any given evening, I’m happy with my two bottles of beer while watching the television. There are plenty of things that are going bad right now, but you still got to celebrate the small wins. My take on alcohol consumption is that it should be for celebrating life and not for drowning oneself in sorrow.
I’m a cheap beer guy through and through. I won’t refuse a fine glass of Don Perignon, but if you ask me what do I want to drink? I would always answer beer, after all, I’m a nothing but a simple-minded fellow.
However, my palate is looking for some sophistication these days – enter whiskey.
A few weeks before my birthday, Pancake asked me about my special day. I told her that I’d like a medium-rare porterhouse, a bowl of mashed potatoes, a cigar, and a glass of whiskey. I then told her that given my financial situation right now, I’d be fine not celebrating my birthday at all. Yep, I’m stubborn like that, and Pancake being Pancake, she sent me a bottle of Scotch as a gift. I’d be honest, I don’t even know what to do without Pancake, she is a blessing that I’m grateful for.

Originated in Scotland, Scotch whiskey has a rich history. First known as “aqua vitae” or “water of life”, it is used as a treatment for all sorts of ailment. The warm and calming effects are noticed as “cure”.
There are no other spirits ever associated with manhood other than whiskey. Scotch whiskey is held with the same high regard by kings, authors, and miners. What separates Scotch from its counterparts is that it must be distilled and aged in Scotland. Scotch tends to have a smokey and earthy flavor. Distilled from barley and aged for at least 3 years. It is broken down into two categories: Blended and single malt Scotch. Blended Scotch is a blend of one or more Scotch whiskey, while Single malt is distilled in a single distillery from malted barley.
Before anything else, let’s talk about our drinking vessel. The internet suggests that you drink your whiskey in a heavy bottom whiskey glass, a specialty whiskey glass, or kick it old school and drink in a tin cup. I don’t have any of those, so I drank mine in a tall glass. To whiskey aficionados out there, don’t worry, I’ll try to get my hands on some whiskey glass as soon as possible. I also want to have the full Scotch Whisky experience.
Next is how to drink your whiskey – neat, watered, on the rocks? Experts suggest drinking your whiskey neat if it’s your first time drinking a particular whiskey. This is to experience the actual taste of the whiskey. So, I pour some in a glass and took a sip, and boy, it packs a punch. It feels warm and it quickly invigorates my senses. Drinking whiskey neat is a guaranteed way to grow a few hairs on your chest.
Our next stop is watered. According to the internet adding water to your whiskey lowers its alcohol by volume. For one serving (1.5oz) of whiskey, adding a teaspoon of tap water will lower its ABV from 40% to 30%. Adding water is best advised on high-proof whiskey, this will dilute the whiskey for a little bit. Of course, I tried it, and it did soften down the kick while still having a great flavor.
Lastly, on the rocks. Experts say that chilling the whiskey is often ill-advised as it numbs down the flavor. For me, I like this more but hey, to each his own, right? It softens the punch just about right for me to enjoy it with some sisig while watching on Netflix. I can’t wait to get my hands on a proper whiskey glass and a sphere ice mold. Nothing beats unwinding on a glass of whiskey and my favorite shows. It was a pleasant experience that I will do from time to time, with friends or even alone.
I still love cheap beer but my first bottle of Scotch is a memorable and enjoyable one. It opened up new doors for my palette and it is an experience that I recommend for anyone to try. I’m even looking for my new bottle of whiskey to try. Again, I’d like to thank Pancake for this wonderful gift!
Scotch is for the man who lives a full and content life. He who savors every challenge and celebration there is in his life. Scotch is for the man who never settled anything for less. He is not looking to get drunk but he wanted to experience everything good in his life.
How about you, what’s your favorite whiskey and way to drink it? I’d love to hear all about it in the comment section.
To courage, freedom, and Scotch Whisky!

Whisky… it’s very hard on the palate. For my part, I much prefer rum – especially arranged rum… but it’s my girl side, it’s sweeter…

Oh yes – I’d really like to meet some of the people from the wordpress sites – and you of course. But if we meet, no chance for you, you’ll get the real French wine. Frankly, it’s the best in the world.

I drink a bit of whiskey most nights. Just a glass most days. Always with my sphere cube of ice. Just like it that way…

Scotch and coconut water. I live in the Caribbean so we get the coconut water fresh out of the nut and there is absolutely nothing better. Cheers!

I love single malt scotch, though I prefer to drink it neat. Glen Morange is really good.

Ahhh whiskey. I too have started appreciating it and bourbon, which is a bit smoother IMO. Our favorites are Woodford Reserve and Elijah Craig, but we greatly enjoy exploring our local craft distillers too. Cheers! 🍻

Hi Kris, sorry for the late reply.
I’m just starting out, and I’m lucky enough for Pancake to give me a bottle as a gift. I’m might look up the stuff you said and see if it’s available here in the Philippines!

Very sweet of her to ignore your protestations and send such a nice gift!! Not a drinker but always manage a tasting of whatever nationally celebrated spirit is, of the place I’m visiting. (I shipped a bottle of Glenmorangie 18 yr to a special beloved friend, who now really loves me forever!)

Mr. A, my last taste of whiskey was way, way back in college. The shot burned all the way down so it definitely as smooth as Scotch. I am pretty much a beer and wine drinker, but I seldom drink much any more.

Same, I love my beer but I don’t drink that much any more. I no longer have that stamina to get hammered. 😅

Same. Ayaw kong nalalasing. I hate losing control and i hate the feeling of passing out drunk. But a glass or two every now and then wouldn’t. Plus given the situation these days, we have to work harder and hustle.
