Mr. A’s Father’s Day Movie Recommendations

Greetings Barbarians! Long days and pleasant nights!

Father’s day is coming and I’m very excited. As you all know I’m a solo father to a wonderful daughter and it seems to me that it is my true calling in life. I’d be honest, there is no blueprint for fatherhood. It’s hard, tedious, and it would make you cry sometimes. Yes, you heard it right, Mr. A cries despite his refusal to. He cried when he first laid his eyes on his daughter. He cried at the time when she was sick and he rushed her to the hospital with nothing in his pocket. Mr. A will admit he cries, but he will refuse anyone to see it. 

Growing up, I never had a father figure. My mom and dad worked in the US while they left us here in the Philippines to study. Whatever wisdom or affection we got, we got it through the phone or the time they got home for a vacation. Despite that, I never blamed my parents, especially my dad, for doing that. After all, they only want what’s best for us. In whatever I find myself lacking, I will always be proud of what my parents did for us.

As I’ve said, I never had a father figure growing up. I’ve relied on the collective wisdom of friends, books, movies, and experiences to shape my outlook in life. Movies, much like books, are a legitimate source of wisdom. There is no denying the power of movies to entertain you or inspire you. With that said, I wanted to list down a few films that serve as my inspirations in becoming a father.

Movies have the power to captivate their audience with well-crafted storytelling. Since it is father’s day, I thought it was a great idea to recommend a few movies for your father’s day viewing pleasure. So, without further ado, I present to you my father’s day movie recommendation. 

Cinderella Man

Copyright Universal Studios. 2005.

A story of redemption, Cinderella Man is a film about boxing contender, James J. Braddock. Forced to retire after an injury, he struggles to survive during the great depression. He gets a chance to get back in the ring again as an underdog. Desperate, he dominates his opponents leading to a fight for the championship. Cinderella Man is more than a boxing story but a story of a man trying to provide for his family. 

Best Line: “The thing is I can’t afford to pay the heat and I had sent my kids to live with relatives, they keep cutting shifts down at the dock, you just don’t get picked every day, I sold everything I got to anybody who would buy, I went on public assistance at the relief office, they gave me nineteen dollars, I need another eighteen dollars and thirty-eight cents so I can pay the heating bill and get the kids back, you all know me well enough to know, if I had anywhere else to go I wouldn’t be here, if you could help me through this time I would surely be grateful”

Chef

A renowned yet down on his luck chef rediscovers his passion for cooking through a food truck. Distraught after a bad review, chef Carl Casper engages in an online exchange that ends his career. He traveled back to his roots and purchased a food truck with the help of his ex-wife. Along with his friend and son, they took on a journey that strengthens his relationship with his son. This movie shows that the best lesson a father could ever give a son is to follow his dreams. 

Best Line: “I may not do everything great in my life, but I’m good at this. I manage to touch people’s lives with what I do and I want to share this with you.”

Gladiator

General Maximus Decimus Meridius loved his family and country. He represents all that is good in a man. Do I even have to say more? Packed with epic action scenes, Gladiator is a certified man movie. Yet, underneath the epic sword fights, Gladiator is a story of a father seeking justice for his family. 

Best line: “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”

The Road

Based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel, The Road is a father and son story set on a post-apocalyptic America. After a devastating extinction event, a man and his young son are trying to survive. They travel on a road scavenging for supplies while avoiding all sorts of danger. The Road is a story of survival and the meaning of a father’s love. 

Best line: “You have to keep carrying the fire.”
