Greetings Barbarians! Long days and pleasant nights!
I’d be honest with you, I’m sick of feelgood pseudo philosophers preaching dress to express not to impress. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, it sounds one-sided, ignorant, and weak. It sounds like something a victim would say. I don’t get why most people put themselves at a disadvantage like that. What I want is for us to be the better version of ourselves.
It’s no secret that my daughter’s mom hated my guts. For some reason, we can’t seem to get along after our messy break-up. So one day, I ran across her on my way to work, and oh boy, I’m glad I looked my best that day.
You see, I don’t want to give her the impression that raising our daughter is taking a lot from me. Sure it’s tough but I made a promise not to let myself go and take care of myself as much as I could. It’s not self-importance, it’s self-respect.
But before we proceed, please like this post and subscribe to this blog. Better yet, why not sponsor this blog. Yes, for a price of a tall caramel macchiato ($3/month), you could help me in maintaining this blog. Of course, I would not take your money without offering something in return. So, besides my weekly posts here on the blog, I’m offering special perks for your generosity. Special perks like:
- A special thank you video
- A shoutout in all my post (I’ll add your blog and social media links if you want to)
- A monthly Q&A session
Please check out my Patreon account here and be a sponsor.

Special thanks to the following for making this all possible:
Being poor doesn’t mean you have to look poor. It has nothing to do with how people see you but how you see yourself. You see, I’m not rich and to be honest, I don’t have anything under my name (hence the Patreon). But I also make it to a point to take care of myself and how I look. I don’t want people to take pity on me, I want people to see what I’m capable of. I want people to see that I’m worthy and nobody else can give you your worth but yourself.
So, the following are some of the things I did to make me feel and look like a million bucks:
Know When and Where to Shop
Think about your means, not your wants. Always be on the lookout for discounts and sale racks. Make a habit of not paying anything at full price. Be nice to clerks and retail people, they do give out their employee discount to nice and charming people.
Nail the Fit
A perfect-fitting cheap clothes look more expensive than bad-fitting expensive clothes. Take your clothes to the tailor, believe me when I say that it is life-changing. Know how to sew and how to do some basic alteration, to save even more money.
Focus on the Classic and the Essentials
Trends come and go. If something looks great 10 years ago and would still look great for the next 10 years then buy it. Never waste your money on trends and always go for timeless classics and basics. There is a reason why I always refer to it as ‘men’s style’, not fashion.
Avoid Prints and Brand Logos
Go for solid colors and simple patterns. Imagine this, you are paying good money to advertise a company. Avoid wearing oversize logos and prints. Not only do they look cheap but they also trick you to do the advertising for them. Solid color and simple patterns will always look great. My rule is if a logo is the size of your fist or bigger, don’t wear them.
Accessorize
Invest in accessories with good taste. A great everyday watch and a nice leather wallet are an essential piece of accessories. Make sure to match your leather and metals. For example, a brown belt and brown shoes or silver watch and silver framed sunglasses.
Focus on Quality and Interchangeability
Believe it or not, my core wardrobe consists of only 15 items. It may not seem much but they work well together that they could do 80 different outfits. Focus on quality rather than quantity, don’t be the guy who owns a thousand shirts and a thousand pairs of jeans.
Stay on Top of Your Grooming Habits
No matter how expensive your clothes are, you will look poor if you have poor grooming habits. That includes taking a shower every day, trimming your nails, and a regular visit to the barber. Think of it as a plant, a plant needs three things to grow, that is fertilizer, water, and sunlight. No matter how expensive the fertilizer is, if you keep it in a closet, it will die. It doesn’t matter if you wear nice clothes, if you have poor grooming habits, you will never look like a million bucks. Stay on top of your grooming.

I don’t know how I missed this blog post but I am enjoying it now. I also love to look good and only own clothes that help, not make me look like a slob. Is it vanity? I don’t think so, just self love which is important. I love to hear what you have to say, and thank you very much. Sending you lots of love.

Hi Summerhill! Nope, it’s not vanity at all. There’s really nothing wrong in wanting to look nice, especially men.

My mother was older when she had me, 38. She was born during the depression and was raised with old fashioned values by a European immigrant. Mom always said it’s better to have a few things which are good quality than a closet full of cheap things.
You will get better wear out of a few expensive, well made pieces. They’ll save you money in the long run. Go with classics. Interchange shirts and sweaters, while sticking to a basic style. When you buy clothing, be sure that you are able to make at least one full outfit from what you’ve bought… either with what you already have or what you’re currently purchasing. Mix and match.
As with men or women, coloring, styles, prints etc are totally a personal choice. Wear what makes YOU feel confident.
I also learned an extremely valuable lesson from my grandfather, which has held true in life. Never under estimate a man based on his clothing. I’ve known more than a few extremely wealthy men in my lifetime. The kind of men who bring their checkbook to purchase a half million dollar home in full and travel the world with ease. They’ve worn Levi’s 501s that are near threadbare, driven old cars. On the outside you’d never have any idea just how wealthy they are.

15 items. Wow. I feel like that helps streamline your morning routine. More energy to focus on other things. 🙂

Yep, to be exact, its 3 chino pants, 3 dress shirts, 2 polo shirts, 2 pair of shoes, a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, a jacket, a watch, and sunglasses. But that is just my core wardrobe, there are other items in my extended wardrobe.
Yeah, many assume that I spend a lot of time dressing up when I really pick one and go. 😅
