The Three Pairs of Shoes Every Man Should Own

Greetings Barbarians! Long days and pleasant nights!

A few days ago, I was reading other blogs when I stumble upon a Maylynno’s “How many pairs of shoes does a person need?“. I know that it wasn’t a question of style, but I’ve decided to make it an inspiration for this post. You see, part of being a man is to know when enough is enough. I know that it contradicts my idea of not limiting oneself but there must be a line somewhere, right? So, to answer the titular question from a style standpoint, the answer is not much.

But before we continue, I’d like to ask first for some help. As you all know blogging is a lot of hard work, not that I’m complaining, but I needed your help in maintaining it. No, I’m not going to ask you for some spare change (that would be too embarrassing), but I will tell you about Shopback.

Shopback is a cashback rewards program available across Asia-Pacific. It allows online shoppers to take part of their cash back when they buy through the platform.

Based on what I experienced, it works, and I was able to get 9-16% of my online purchases back; saving me some money.

Your support would mean so much to me, it will ensure better content in the future and at the time save some cash by following this link: https://app.shopback.com/phl?raf=Z8jVcU&slug=referred-signup-bonus

Now back to the list…

I’ll admit that over the years, I’ve amassed quite a collection of shoes but that was just the result of diligence. I do my best to take care of them because… I can’t afford to buy another pair. Reality is, I’m not flushed; I wish I am, but I am not. There is no way I could afford a Gucci or a Tom Ford or whatever luxury is out there, and I think, so are you.

So, if you happen to be like me, someone who wanted to look great without spending too much, this post is for you.

Today, I want to talk about the 3 pairs of shoes that you will only need. Before we get right down to it, I wanted to tell you about some criteria that I considered in making this list.

First off, I will look into a shoes’ function, if it is on the casual side or from the formal side depending on your needs. I’ll stay away from a specialized shoe designed with a specific purpose like basketball shoes.

Second, I will look into a shoe’s versatility and timelessness. How well does it go with common pieces of clothing like jeans, chinos or shorts? Can you dress it up or dress it down?

Now that we got our criteria, let’s get down to my picks.

First up, a sneaker; leather or canvas depending on your lifestyle. If you’re a more laid-back casual kind of guy, go for canvas; but if you’re on the stylish professional side, go for leather. To be honest, I prefer canvas over leather because of its breathability. The Philippine weather can be punishing sometimes and it’s hard to dress up during the heat. But, if ever I’d be stuck with just one sneaker, I’d choose a minimal white leather sneaker because of its versatility. You could dress it up or dress it down and could offer a lot of options. Stick to the classics, they have a great silhouette and they never go out of style. My recommendations would be the Converse Chuck Taylor, the Vans Old Skool, the Adidas Stan Smith, the Adidas Continental 80, the Nike Cortez, and the Nike Air Force 1.

Another pair of shoes that should belong to a man’s closet is a nice pair of classic boots. A lot of Filipino men shun wearing boots and I can’t see any reason not to. A pair of boots is a manliness booster, it could add a bit of height and add weight to your silhouette. Boots are great for those days where you needed more protection from the weather. I prefer brown boots over black, I like that more casual feel of a brown boot. Stick to a more classic design like the Chukka, Chelsea or the quintessential work boots. Wear them with a great pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a sports jacket and you’re good to go.

And lastly, a pair of black oxfords; captoe or wholecut and with no brogue. This will serve as your go-to shoes for formal events such as weddings and funerals. I’d admit that I don’t have a pair of black oxfords and I’m saving some money to get one. Oxfords are hands down the dressiest pair of shoes a man could ever have. They can also be a bit pricey but it’s worth it. I’d suggest saving up some money and invest in a great pair of oxfords that could last a lifetime.

So, there you have it, my pick for 3 pairs of shoes every man should own. Now I’d like to hear what you think, comment down below!

    1. Hi Ally! Thanks for dropping by!
Hmmm… for women, I’d suggest a neutral flats, a pair of boots and an elegant black pumps for formal events. I hope that helps!
      Cheers! =)
